Yorkshire Post Column June 2019: Launching our Industrial Strategy Proposals
One Yorkshire town appears to be thriving post-lockdown. A High Streets Recovery Tracker on the Centre for Cities website has ranked a with a rate of on August 11 – the last available date that the figures go up to.
Thirty years on and the family-owned business, which manufactures labels for the hazardous chemicals sector, operates from a 21, sq ft facility in Leeds, employing more than 30 people and has its sights set on exporting to mainland Europe. The figures were boosted by changes in global legislation which mean that the same criteria applies for classifying hazardous chemicals worldwide, rather than differing according to geographical region. Some of these new regulations are still coming into effect.
I remember the first company website being made, and we did a newsletter celebrating 30 years that was distributed to about 3, people which is a huge change from where we were. I think we are one of two in the area which have survived. In , Hibiscus Plc moved to its current site in Hudswell Road, Leeds, and in it expanded the premises, tripling its size.
But it costs us more to get it there. We know from past experience that we can, from Leeds, service a customer there. Meanwhile, the company is also expanding into new markets thanks to its increased involvement in software development.

Apparently Article has been on the go for a while now, but its last 13 issues have only been available within its home city. Issue zero of volume two changes all that, distributed for the first time in Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, and of course Sheffield. Some of those images are also used for the cover, and it seems it all got a bit too much for their hardware — the magazine opens with photos of Glen the photocopier repair man at work.
Not everything in the magazine is about the north, but those are the bits I like the most. For example two stories on alternative city branding in Sheffield and Manchester are really fascinating — the interviews with Sheffield Publicity Department and Manchester Modernist Society give exactly the sort of local perspective that allows for a clear, independent view of those cities. Pictures by Tony Johnson. Michelangelo almost went blind from the paint dripping off the Sistine Chapel, Van Gough cut off his ear and Edvard Munch descended into alcoholism. David Rusbatch also suffers for his art. So much so that he has been hospitalised twice and knows that every new work may very well require a shot of antihistamine. We speak just after he has hung the final work and surrounded by his new collection he admits his journey to the easel was an unlikely one. I played football to a decent level and I think I assumed that I would always be involved in sport, but then I go injured.
In he became one of the youngest ever exhibitors at the National Design Museum and the following year his work was shown at the Venice Biennale, but he admits that it was another five years before he had his real breakthrough moment. I liked that and it really felt that people were getting what I was trying to do. His work I Used to Sleep at Night was inspired by the Yorkshire Dales, but the green hues of Malham and the surrounding area were replaced with neon tones.
Flaunt Every Kiss is similarly in your face and for each of the 25 paintings in the new collection, Rusbatch has taken inspiration from the often fleeting nature of love and relationships in the 21st century. I am, I think, a romantic at heart, but one of the paintings in the collection is called The Bestest Things in Life and I wanted to show that there are other things that can make you happy. I have been working with RedHouse for years and they have always been incredibly supportive.

Shoreham Airshow Me looking brave before taking to the air and the wing of the plane. Wow, it was cold!! But the whole experience was totally exhilarating. Computers and the internet are amazing things. The Yorkshire Post has gone into overdrive by producing three supplements to mark the start of the Tour de France in the county this weekend. Finally on Saturday as the race gets under way the Johnston Press -owned titles will be publishing a special souvenir edition of The Yorkshire Post Saturday magazine. A comprehensive social media marketing campaign has already begun to promote all three products, spearheaded by staff using Twitter , Facebook and email alerts.
And you know what — the agencies are crying out for that message. It remains to be seen how good the advertising within them is, or indeed, how much of it there is. As for the inappropriate use of Brush Script for this advertiser: words fail me. It struck me that this was maybe an advertorial, hence the lack of logo, and readers were being duped into thinking it was an ad.
Shoddy all round. Having said that, it generated more revenue than an online ad. Creativity in the print products is vital. Whilst there remains a readership for print, JP should ensure that the core products are maximising their potential. Report this comment.

After deciding to bail out of her planned stately home wedding for guests with just 24 hours to go, Haley then struggled to find another relationship. After two fruitless years of internet dating, introduction agencies and trawling wine bars with friends, she decided to set up her own upmarket dating agency, Elect Club. Matt popped the question and I accepted,” explains Haley, now But once we moved in together we started to row about everything.
The worst one was the day before we were due to get married. The couple were in turmoil, should they call it off or vow to make it work? In the end they agreed they weren’t right for each other and called it off. But they were great about it, in fact my parents were quite relived, they’d had misgivings about the relationship from the start.
It was still one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. After an initial heartache following the separation Haley decided to enjoy the single life for a year. She was heading up the pharmacy department at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and says there was a complete lack of eligible professionals at work. She joined an upmarket dating agency but ended up going on a date but to no avail.
Haley and her single friends then trawled the City bars but soon tired of City traders trying to impress with their wealth. In , tired of the fruitless dates, she took a very brave decision and left her career as a pharmacist to launch her own upmarket dating agency in London.
The dating business that became my perfect match
Jonny Bairstow helped England move into an unassailable lead against Ireland in the Royal London series with a barnstorming 82 from 41 balls before admitting he hopes to earn a Test recall through the Bob Willis Trophy. Bairstow needed just 21 balls to reach his fifty at the Ageas Bowl to equal the record for the fastest one-day international half-century by an England batsman first set by Eoin Morgan against Australia two years ago.
While Bairstow, who clubbed 14 fours and two sixes in his belligerent innings, continues to prove he is among the most accomplished white-ball openers around, he was quizzed afterwards about how he rates his Test prospects. Despite being included in a red-ball training group prior to the raisethebat series against the West Indies, he was a high-profile omission from the squad which claimed a victory. And while a Test return seems to be high on his list of priorities, Bairstow is well aware he will need several eye-catching performances for Yorkshire in the inaugural and one-off Bob Willis Trophy to force his way back in.
